Suggested Family Routes
Westport to Newport (12km, 1-1.5 hours one way). This is an off road route.
Part of the Great Western Greenway (43km Total)
This is very safe off road route with no traffic. This off road track is on a converted old railway line, with gentle gradients. This route is the first of 3 sections of Greenway and is very doable with small kids. Allow up to two to three hours for a round trip (including any stop-offs). When you arrive in Newport, immediately beside the river, you will see a kids playground, a picnic area, a restaurant/bar and lots of bikes parked up. Return is the same way off-road. For more information press the “+” below.
This route out along the coast is highly recommended, there are stunning views out over Clew Bay and many points of interest and wonderful places to stop off for a photo or picnic. Please see our free colour Map & Brochure! We have marked out the quietest roads to use with the least traffic so kids in trailers and on a bike seat are safe. However, kids cycling on their own would have to have experience, confidence and road sense. 8-10 years old is recommended – as this route can also be busy in places. Our route takes you through Murrisk village and hinterland coming out at Croagh Patrick. Here, there is a Visitor Center, coffee shop, restaurant/bar and ice cream stand – selling the famous ’99 cone, an Irish kid’s favourite soft ice cream. An idea with older kids (8 years and older) is to lock the bikes and climb the mountain (Pilgrims Way). There are spectacular views from Ancient Holy Mountain top (3.5 hours round trip). Bertra Beach is a short cycle from Croagh Patrick with parking, coffee shop, and toilets on site. We advise you to bring plenty of water, a snack, a mobile phone and rain/wind jacket or suitable pullover especially for the mountain climb. Weather can change quickly, even in the summer. Saddle bags available to carry these items from our store. For more information press the “+” symbols above.

Your to do list
Magic route to get super photos to remember. There is a great gastro pub with excellent food and wine on the river in Newport. On your return cycle visit Buckfield Pub, which is only 30 minutes from Westport. This is a special old world pub from the past that is located in the middle of nowhere. You’ll enjoy a friendly welcome from Paul and Carmel. They serve a great pint! There is a wood fire, large room with pool and darts as well as an outdoor tables looking over county side. Grainne O’Malley’s castle is only 5 minutes away, with Rosmoney Riding stables nearby too. You’ll finish in McCarthy’s Bar next door to Paddy & Nelly. McCarthy’s Bar has a private room with bar and beer garden and is located opposite to Danollas – the best chipper in Westport (opposite pub).
We have other great ideas and suggestions for you to make a fun Paddy & Nelly Bike tour. Give a call or send a message.
