Staying in Newport? Or just want a head start on the Greenway?

Newport sits right on the Great Western Greenway, roughly a third of the way along the 42km route between Westport and Achill. It's a natural place to begin — and if you're based there, or you'd rather park there than in Westport, there's no reason to backtrack.

We make it as easy as 1, 2, 3.

1. Tell us where you are. Your guesthouse, your B&B, your holiday let, or the car park in Newport town. Book your bikes and give us the address when you're booking.

2. We do the moving. Two ways to play it:

• Bikes to Newport — we deliver your bikes, helmets and kit to your door or your car, fitted and ready to ride.
• You to Newport — leave the car in Westport and travel out with us. Drop-off in Newport for 10.30am, bikes waiting.

3. Ride. Head west toward Mulranny and Achill for the wide Atlantic views and the Nephin Beg mountains on your shoulder — or turn for Westport and finish with a pint on Bridge Street. It's your day. Full-day hire either way.

Why Newport works

You'll roll out under the old Newport Viaduct — seven stone arches carrying the former Achill railway line over the Black Oak River, and one of the most photographed spots on the whole Greenway. The line closed in 1937; the bridges, cuttings and gentle railway gradients are the reason the Greenway is as flat and as forgiving as it is today. Newport puts that heritage at the start of your ride rather than somewhere in the middle of it.

For avid cyclists, starting at Newport opens up the longer western half of the route — Newport to Achill and back is a proper day out. For families and casual riders, Newport to Mulranny is a comfortable, traffic-free run with a café at the far end.
