About This Experience
What To Expect
The Great Western Greenway runs 42 km along a former railway line between Westport and Achill Island — completely off-road, gently graded, and open to cyclists of every level. The easiest way to enjoy it: set off from Westport whenever suits you, ride as far as you like, and take the bus back into town when you’re done.
Cycle out on your own schedule
Leave Westport any time between 9:00 am and 12:30 pm — no fixed departure to catch, no rush. Ride the greenway at your own pace, stop for photos, coffee and the views across Clew Bay, and turn around wherever suits you. Plenty of people ride the full route to Achill; plenty more turn at Mulranny or Newport. It’s your day.
The bus brings you back
When you’re ready, catch a scheduled return bus back into Westport. The return bus costs €10.50 per person, with services at 3:20 pm and 5:20 pm. No cycling back through town traffic at the end of a long day — just relax and let the bus do the work.
Please note: return bus times change with the season and some evening services don’t run in winter, so we’ll confirm the current timetable with you when you book.
Prefer to cycle one way only?
If you’d rather be driven out and cycle back, we also run a morning shuttle towards Achill — ask us about it when you call. Just note it ties you to a set departure time and finishes with a short stretch back into Westport traffic.
